North Korean abductions of Japanese citizens

abduction of Japanese citizens by North Korea from 1977-83

Between 1977 and 1983, North Korean government agents abducted Japanese citizens from Japan. Although only 17 Japanese citizens (eight men and nine women) are officially recognized by the Japanese government as having been abducted, it is estimated that there may have been hundreds more. The Japanese National Police Agency lists 869 cases of missing persons in which the possibility of abduction by North Korea cannot be ruled out.

Many non-Japanese citizens, including eight citizens from European countries and one from the Middle East, have been abducted from Japan by North Korea.
