Black Madonna of Częstochowa

icon of the Virgin Mary in Poland

The image of Our Lady the Black Madonna of Częstochowa (also known as Our Lady of Jasna Góra) (Polish: Czarna Madonna z Częstochowy/Jasnej Góry; Latin: Imago Miraculis Beatæ Virginis Mariæ Immaculatæ Conceptæ, in Claro Monte, lit. 'Miraculous Image of the Immaculate Conception, the Blessed Virgin Mary in the Crystal Mountain') (Polish: Matka Boża Częstochowska/ Jasnogórska) is a venerated icon of the Madonna and Child enshrined at the Jasna Góra Monastery in Częstochowa, Poland.

Pope Clement XI issued a Pontifical decree of canonical coronation to the image on 8 September 1717 via the Vatican Chapter. The icon has also merited three Pontifical Golden Roses. Accordingly, it is encased under high security glass and is widely venerated by both Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox Christians, most especially amongst the Polish people.
