1980 Summer Olympics boycott

NATO's soft opposition to the Soviet Union intervention in Afghanistan

The United States led a boycott of the 1980 Summer Olympics, held in Moscow, to protest against the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. More than 60 countries joined the boycott to varying degrees, affecting athletes, fans, and international relations. The absence of so many competitors changed the outcomes of some events, led to alternative competitions, and provoked a retaliatory boycott by the Soviet Union and its satellite states of the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles.
