Israeli occupation of the Palestinian territories

Israel has occupied the Palestinian territories and the Golan Heights of Syria since the Six-Day War of 1967. It has previously occupied the Sinai Peninsula of Egypt and southern Lebanon as well. Prior to 1967, control of the Palestinian territories was split between Egypt and Jordan, which administered the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, respectively. The Israeli occupation of the Palestinian territories and the Golan Heights, where Israel has transferred parts of its population and built large settlements, is the longest military occupation in modern history.

From 1967 to 1981, the four areas were administered under the Israeli Military Governorate, and after the return of the Sinai Peninsula to Egypt after the Egypt–Israel peace treaty, Israel effectively annexed the Golan Heights and East Jerusalem in 1980, and brought the rest of the West Bank and the Gaza Strip under the Israeli Civil Administration.

In 2005, Israel unilaterally disengaged from the Gaza Strip, but the International Court of Justice, the UN General Assembly, and the UN Security Council continue to consider Israel as the occupying power there due to its blockade of the territory. In 2024, the ICJ ruled in an advisory opinion that Israel's occupation was illegal and called for Israel to end its "unlawful presence ... as rapidly as possible" and to make reparations to the people of the occupied territories.

The Supreme Court of Israel has ruled that Israel is holding the West Bank under "belligerent occupation". However, successive Israeli governments have preferred the term "disputed territories" in the case of the West Bank, and Israel likewise maintains that the West Bank is disputed territory.

Between 2023 and 2026, Israel expanded its occupation in the Gaza Strip, Lebanon, and Syria by a combined 1000 square kilometers, as calculated by the Associated Press. In January 2024, following the Hamas attacks on Israel on October 7, Israel reoccupied most of the northern Gaza Strip, leading to further clashes. After a shifting presence of military ground forces during the war, the October 2025 comprehensive agreement established a yellow demarcation line that left the Israeli military in control of 53% of the Gaza Strip. Israel has since shifted this line. In July 2026, NPR reported that Israel's military controlled almost 70% of the strip.

The Israeli military invaded Lebanon during the 2024 war and retained a military presence at five Israeli military outposts in Lebanon afterwards, pledging in April 2025 to remain there. In March and April 2026, Israel began an expanded military occupation within southern Lebanon, reaching a total of 570–608 square kilometers (220–234 sq mi) by the 2026 Israel–Lebanon temporary ceasefire.

In December 2024, Israel occupied the UN buffer zone established to the east of the already occupied Golan Heights in Syria. The United Nations calculates this area at 235 square kilometers (91 square miles).
