Battle of Aydın

1919 battle

The Battle of Aydın (Turkish: Aydın Muharebesi or Aydın Savunması, literally: "Defence of Aydın") was a series of wide-scale armed conflicts and military engagements fought between 27 June and 4 July 1919 in and around the city of Aydın during the initial phase of the Greco-Turkish War (1919–1922). The conflict was triggered by the advance of the Greek Army into the Menderes Valley and subsequent resistance by local Turkish irregular forces (Kuva-yi Milliye). The battle resulted in the destruction of large portions of the city by fire, heavy civilian casualties on both sides, and widespread displacement of the local population.
