2026 Zambian presidential election

15th Zambian presidential election

General elections were held in Zambia on 13 August 2026 to elect a president, members of the National Assembly, councillors and council chairs.

In the presidential election, incumbent president Hakainde Hichilema of the United Party for National Development (UPND) was seeking a second term. His running mate was incumbent vice president Mutale Nalumango. There were 13 other candidates, with the main challenge being from Brian Mundubile of the Tonse Alliance's National Reconciliation Party for Unity and Prosperity (NRPUP), and his running mate Makebi Zulu. Hichilema won the election in the first round with 60.49% of the vote; Mundubile received 37.87%.

In the National Assembly, the UPND won a majority, obtaining 160 of the 278 seats. The NRPUP came second, with 76 seats. Independents, smaller parties and directly appointed members received the remaining 42 seats.

Mundubile alleged Tanzanian interference in the election. He was arrested in a raid while the votes were being counted, and refused to accept the results. International observers reported that the election was free and transparent, but not fair due to misuse of state resources and restrictions on opposition campaigns. The same raid that resulted in Mundubile's arrest saw the arrest of 10 additional people and the death of Mutotwe Kafwaya, a former minister.
