The Great Buddha Hall of Tōdai-ji

The wooden hall over the bronze Great Buddha of Nara, cast for Emperor Shōmu and dedicated in 752. Burned in wars in 1181 and 1567, it was rebuilt each time. The present hall of 1709 is a third narrower than the first, yet was the largest wooden building in the world until 1998.
