Trade route

Via Egnatia

Built by the Romans from the 2nd century BCE, this road crossed the Balkans from Dyrrachium on the Adriatic via Lake Ohrid and Thessalonica to Byzantium. It joined the Via Appia across the sea and later carried most of Byzantium's overland trade with western Europe.
