Trade route

Trans-Saharan trade

Camel caravans crossed the Sahara between North Africa and the Sahel, trading Saharan salt and Mediterranean goods for West African gold; enslaved people were also forced north. Trade peaked from the 8th to the 16th century and shrank after Morocco's invasion of Songhay in 1591.
