Roman grain supply

Rome imported nearly all its grain. Fleets brought wheat from Africa and, after 30 BCE, from Egypt; the slow trip from Alexandria ran via Cyprus, Lycia, south Crete and Sicily to Puteoli or Ostia, and barges took it up the Tiber. Part was handed out free as the grain dole.
