Panama Canal Route

Since 1914 ships have crossed the isthmus between Colón and Panama City through locks and the artificial Gatun Lake instead of rounding South America. The canal joins the Atlantic and Pacific coasts of the Americas and carries grain, fuel and container cargo, much of it between Asia and the Americas.
