Trade route

Nanban trade

Each year a Portuguese carrack sailed from Goa via Malacca to Macau, loaded Chinese silk and went on to Nagasaki to sell it for Japanese silver. The trade also brought firearms and Jesuit missionaries to Japan and ended when the Tokugawa shogunate expelled the Portuguese in 1639.
