Macassan trepang trade

Each December fleets of praus from Makassar sailed on the north-west monsoon to Arnhem Land (Marege') and the Kimberley (Kayu Jawa) to gather and smoke trepang for Chinese buyers. Crews traded cloth, tobacco and metal tools with Aboriginal people until licence fees ended the voyages in 1907.
