Darb el-Arbaʽin (Forty Days Road)

The easternmost Saharan caravan road ran about 1,800 km from Darfur to the Nile at Asyut by a chain of wells and oases. Caravans carried ivory, gold, feathers and gum, and thousands of enslaved people a year were forced along it until the 1890s. Camel herds for Egypt still use it.
