Trade route

Canton trade

From 1757 the Qing confined Western trade to Canton, where licensed Cohong merchants sold tea, silk and porcelain, mostly for silver. British private traders came to pay with opium shipped from Calcutta, which China banned; the dispute led to war, and the 1842 Treaty of Nanking ended the system.
