Trade route

Baltic grain trade

From the 15th century, Dutch ships sailed through the Sound, paying toll at Elsinore, to load rye and wheat that came down the Vistula to Danzig, plus timber, hemp and tar from Riga. They brought salt and herring back, and Amsterdam became the hub of Europe's grain trade.
