Siege of Bijapur

1685–1686 siege in India

The siege of Bijapur (1 April 1685 - 12 September 1686) was a military conflict between the Mughal Empire and the Bijapur Sultanate, over the latter's fortified capital city of Bijapur (in modern day Karnataka, India). It was the culmination of previous Mughal attempts to invade the Sultanate earlier that century, and took place during the reigns of Mughal emperor Aurangzeb and sultan Sikandar Adil Shah. Lasting 15 months, the siege was initially carried out by Mughal officers such as prince Azam Shah and Ghaziuddin Khan Feroze Jung, before Aurangzeb arrived in Bijapur midway to conduct the siege personally. The conflict ended in Mughal victory, resulting in the imprisonment of Sikandar Adil Shah and incorporation of the Bijapur Sultanate as a Mughal province.
