Before Lý Thái Tổ was even buried, the princes Vũ Đức, Dực Thánh and Đông Chinh surrounded the palace to seize the throne from the crown prince; the guards under Lê Phụng Hiểu killed Vũ Đức and drove off the others, and Khai Quốc rose at Trường Yên.
