Egyptian pound

official currency of Egypt

The Egyptian pound (Egyptian Arabic: جنيه مصرى [ɡeˈneː ˈmɑsˤri, ˈɡeni-] from English "guinea"; symbol: £; international abbreviations: E£, £E, LE; currency code: EGP; Arabic symbol: ج.م.) is the official currency of Egypt, introduced in 1834 to replace the Egyptian piastre.

Each pound (Egyptian Arabic: Genayh, جنيه) is divided into 100 piastres (Arabic: qirsh, قرش; abbreviation: "PT", short for "piastre tarif").

Each pound was also historically divided into 1,000 milliemes (مليم [mælˈliːm]; French: millième, abbreviated to m or mill). Since July 6, 2022, the 10- and 20-pound notes have been made out of polymer plastic paper.
