Crossing the Nam Quan pass on 8 January 1077, Guo Kui and Zhao Xie met hard resistance from Thân Cảnh Phúc's hill troops and war elephants at the Quyết Lý pass, then forced the fortified Chi Lăng pass and marched on toward Thăng Long.
