Battles of Enna

829 battles

The Battles of Enna were a series of engagements fought between the Aghlabids and a Byzantine expeditionary force near the fortress of Castrogiovanni (modern Enna) in Sicily. In the first battle, the Byzantines commander Theodotus was defeated by the Aghlabids and forced to retreat into Enna. However, aided by the subsequent death of the Aghlabid leader Muhammad ibn Abi'l-Jawari, Theodotus marched out and won two subsequent battles against the Aghlabid army. Losing much of their fighting strength and their base camp to the Byzantines, the remnants of the Aghlabid army were driven from the vicinity of Enna, marking a temporary check on the Muslim conquest of Sicily.
